The Classic Meets the 175 VPO to Melt Design-Ideas

The new Classic EVO is based on the successful EISA Award winner Pro-Ject The Classic. The main improvement is the sub-platter, where we used the experience we gained from designing the 175 – Vienna Philharmonic Record-player to add key changes to the Classic EVO. The main bearing construction we use is a similar system as the one on the Vienna Philharmonic Record-player. For improved comfort, an electronic speed change was built in, which lets you switch from 33 to 45 rpm (and vice versa) with the push of a button. Compared to the old Classic, we improved the sub-chassis; we tried to make it heavier and stiffer to reduce resonances. Isolating the platter and tonearm from the resonances of the motor and main plinth is the target. The heavy aluminium main platter construction utilises advanced thermo plastic elastomers (TPE) for optimising resonance behaviour.

The tonearm tube is made out of a sandwich of carbon and aluminium: carbon for stiffness and speed, aluminium for better damping. The bearing has been upgraded to the same type that is used on our Pro-Ject CC EVO tonearms. It facilitates frictionless vertical and horizontal movement, guaranteeing precise tracking across the entire duration of the record. The counterweight incorporates a TPE* damper which allows us to reduce the amplitude of the tonearm cartridge resonance frequency by 50%. As typical for Pro-Ject we offer also azimuth and VTA adjustment to use a variety of cartridges.

We supply as standard the Ortofon Quintet Red moving coil cartridge. However, as the tonearm offers excellent damping and flexibility as well, its effective mass can be called middle heavy, so it is also a very good partner for MC cartridges.

9” Carbon & Aluminium Tonearm

The Pro-Ject Classic EVO tonearm is made of a composite aluminium and carbon fibre design. It’s 9” length and extra weight mean it is compatible with a wide range of MM & MC cartridges. Made using a sandwich design, the outer tube is carbon fibre, used for stiffness and responsiveness to the records groove. Within this carbon layer the tonearm has an internal aluminium framework, adding extra protection by damping interference to the delicate internal tonearm cables.

Counterweight, Azimuth & VTA Adjustment

The Pro-Ject Classic EVO counterweight incorporates a TPE* damping material into its design. This allows us to reduce the amplitude of the tonearm cartridge resonance frequency by 50%. The Pro-Ject Classic EVO also allows a lot more adjustment than a regular turntable. The tonearm has extra tweaking ability for both Azimuth (twist) and VTA (height) adjustment. Allowing you to modify the turntable for use with a variety of Moving Magnet and Moving Coil cartridges.

Aluminium Sub-Platter

A beautifully crafted, diamond-cut aluminium sub-platter. With extremely low tolerances and a heavy design, this stunning aluminium sub-platter helps remove wow and flutter and facilitates accurate speed for your music. The aluminium sub-platter is completely unique and only available on the Pro-Ject Classic EVO.

Speed Control for Every Record

In-built Speed Control on the Pro-Ject Classic EVO allows you to play all formats of records. The common 33 & 45 RPM speeds are toggled between with an effortless click of the button. For 78 RPM Shellac records it’s a simple belt change (included in the box) and the addition of an Ortofon 78 stylus upgrade.
